Netflix is a video streaming service which was created August 29, 1997 and has continue to grow and has become extremely popular in the last 10 years.

Netflix has a mixture of films and TV series within any genre from horror to children's. It has a mass audience as it has a wide range of items to watch. It has continuously grown as it is now easy to watch films anywhere and everywhere. For example you could watch it using your 4G on the train, and although this uses data from someones smart phone/tablet, it makes watching films easier. Additionally, Netflix now allows you to download content so you can consume the many texts without using data.
They have become one of the biggest streaming platforms around and even put places out of business due to the fact it continuously grows with more and more subscribers everyday. In the last 10 years it has become more and more popular due to Netflix creating their own shows people want to watch and they can only watch it on Netflix as it is only streamed there. From the graph we can see the rise in international subscribers dramatically went up in the last 7 years compared to the United States subscribers has kept around the same. This shows that they have been an successful company as it has spread out of the country it was made in and had become more popular world wide showing the spread from its roots.

The content available includes Netflix's own movies and series as well as content they have bought to show on the platform. They have different sections for different genres as well has a whole section for kids. This also helps with navigation of the platform so people can easily find what they want to watch. Also when paying for Netflix you get an additional 4 accounts so you can share it with friends or family which means you can use the uses and gratifications theory of social interaction and therefore they can share what they watch together. Netflix also provides viewers with recommended watches and therefore they can find items they are into watching  and therefore they find new programmes. It also sends notifications to people about recommendations that are tailored to your viewing habits so they are always updated with new watches. Netflix expanded on the kids section which means there is content for all ages even the younger children and therefore they can put on what they want to watch whenever they want and not have programmes scheduled they don't like. Even though you can tailor your home page to what you like and how you want it all content is accessible to any user so you can switch up what you want to watch.

Since the rise in Netflix there has been a fall in other video watching services such as Blockbuster. From the graph we can see that from when Netflix begin to rise block buster begins to fall until it hits the bankrupt point. The plummet of blockbuster fell very quickly compared to the rise in Netflix. When it reaches 2004 block buster really starts to plummet and in 2010 it went completely bankrupt. This is due to the technological convergence like the invent of smart phones people are now using it to do so much more than text and call.  It makes it easier to pay for a subscription and get as many films and shows as you want than to pay to rent the film and may be over charged if you don't return it in time.  As we can see from the chart people realised this very quickly and this is where we begin to see the rise in netflix's users. The reasons for block busters closure is because of the technological convergence people are becoming more modern

In 2010 Netflix were making $2.3 million. However, in 2018 they made $845 million which is a huge increase in 8 years. Netflix gained more and more money and started to create their own programmes which became more and more popular and more people bought subscriptions as they can only watch on that platform. These were shows such as stranger things, the crown, the kissing booth. All shows would be passed around by word of mouth to other people and because of this people will buy a Netflix account in order to watch these and we they begin to like the series they will want to keep the subscription to watch more shows produced.

As well as word of mouth Netflix has very clever marketing techniques. As they are a very modern streaming service they want to keep with this modern theme and take advantage of technological convergence. This is why they advertise the majority of their items on social media such as instagram, Facebook, twitter etc.  This is because social media is a part of the majority of peoples lives whether its teenagers on instagram or older adults on Facebook Netflix finds a way to target that demographic. This is why netflix is successful because they use marketing on social media to attract the audience. The do this by posting teasers and trailers online so people will watch and feel interested. When they find out its only available to watch on Netflix they may want to buy the subscription in order for them to browse the different genres and ind items they want to buy.

Netflix is accessible through your laptop, phone and smart Tv (basically any black box). This contributes to the success of Netflix as it shows it is portable as you can watch it on your phone or tablet when you are out and about as long as you have data or have downloaded the programme. This means people can watch their new series when they are on their way to work or when they are going on a trip in order to pass the time rather than just being able to watch it on your TV. But also having it on your TV means you can watch it on the big screen and be comfy and bring the family together.

People watch Netflix as they create original content such as 'Stranger Things', 'Black Mirror' and the 'End of the (World)' they are only streamed on Netflix meaning people can't watch it anywhere els except by creating a Netflix account. When people see trailers for new series and films created by Netflix that they want to watch they have to subscribe to Netflix in order to watch it this means they have a free trial for 7 days in order to watch items on Netflix  then you pay for it if you enjoy it. This free trial attracts the audiences in as they know they know If they don't enjoy it they can always back out however by the variety of genres they have they should enjoy it enough to keep the subscription.

Different audiences are reached through he use of their marketing techniques. For example the marketing for Netflix's original series stranger things were done over social media such as instagram. They created a stranger things instagram page in order to promote their product. It included trailers, behind the scenes and interviews. This will attract teenagers as they use social media nearly everyday and are the target audience for this series so by doing it digital it will relate to them more. For older audiences they will do the same however by using facebook as that is now a platform for older people so by posting trailers for series such as the crown will attract the older audiences. Netflix use different ways to attract their audiences tp ensure they cover the right target demographic for that programmed or movie in order to gain the most amount of viewers. This contributes to their success as by marketing to the correct audience they will gain the attention from the audience meaning more people will be creating accounts and streaming the programmes which will make more and more people spreading a good word about Netflix and they gain more income.

Smart Tv's have a positive impact on the success of Netflix as not only can they watch it on their laptops, tablets and phone but they can watch it on the big screen as smart tv has the option of Netflix on it. This means more people can create accounts who don't have laptops and fid it difficult to watch on phones as its too small. More People will now pay for a subscription as they can watch it like they can watch all their other programmes.

Netflix does use celebrity endorsement in order to help promote their shows. For example the new season of black mirror used Miley Cyrus as the main character to help promote they released the album used in the show as part of drawing in the audience as well as using her instagram to help attract people who are fans of hers to watch the show. This helps with the success of Netflix as a celebrity will have a huge fan base so as well as black mirror fans watching the show Miley Cyrus fans will watch the show meaning more streams of the programme and more Netflix accounts used.
