Job Roles (Unit 24: P4,M2,D2)

Learning outcome 2 (unit 24): Understand the behaviours, skills and attributes necessary within the advertising industry

(P4 U24) Explain the behaviours and attributes required for a specific job role
Professional attributes:

The professional attributes that a successful marketing manager requires include :

Product knowledge. This is essential because the role of a marketing manager is to promote the product to  potential customers. If the marketing manager does not fully understand the product then they cannot portray it in the best possible way and clients will not be aware of the full potential of the product. They may then choose to look elsewhere for their requirements.

Planning for a campaign: It is important that a marketing manager is able to plan the campaign and delegate roles to other members of the team being aware of the qualities and skills that his team has and using them to the best advantage so that the campaign is professional and successful.

Strategic skills: It is important that a marketing manager is aware of the clients goals and can then decide on the best course of action to achieve these goals. This means analysing where the client is now and deciding on a strategy to take them forward.

Pitching Skills: The marketing manager must be able to have the skills and attributes to pitch at an appropriate level to appeal to the client. A strong pitch requires the marketing manager to show their sound knowledge of the product and to explain clearly the different uses it may have. The pitch needs to make the client feel it is the best product for their needs.

The professional attributes that a successful sales representative requires include:

Product knowledge: It is essential for a sales representative to know their product thoroughly. It is the job of the sales representative to encourage the customer to buy. The sales representative is the person who is face to face with the customer, they are the person who will be asked the questions and will be expected to answer all queries. A customer may be put off a product if the sales representative cannot explain what uses the product has.

Industry knowledge: A sales representative should have good knowledge of similar products made by a competitor. They may be asked why their product is better than another and without industry knowledge they cannot answer this and may lose out on a sale.

Learning: A sales representative should be prepared to continue learning and training throughout their career. Sales techniques are changing and developing all the time. If a sales representative does not keep up with modern trends in the sales industry he runs the risk of falling behind others and eventually of failure.

The professional attributes that a Graphic Designer requires include:

Creativity: A graphic designer must be a creative person with unique fresh ideas and innovative designs.. They need to be able to make their design eye catching so that it gets noticed by clients. A successful graphic design will ensure that a product is immediately recognised by the colours and style used by the designer.

Technical Skills: A graphic designer must have the technical skills to use the software programmes that are available, such as photoshop. Without these technical skills they will not be able to produce the most up to date designs which their audience requires and expects. It is important that a graphic designer keeps learning about new programmes which are available.

Personal Attributes:

Graphic Designer: The personal skills that a graphic designer requires include:

Communication Skills: A graphic designer needs to have the skills to listen  and talk to the client and understand from them just what they require. It is the job of a graphic designer to communicate using visuals and text effectively but they also need to listen to feedback from the client as the project develops and act upon it.

Collaborative skills: A graphic designer should be aware of what they personally are good at and then be prepared to collaborate with others who have a different skill set. This will help produce the best design.

Time keeping: A graphic designer needs to be aware f how long they have to create the product and ensure they use their time wisely during the planning and designing. This could be done by creating a GANNT chat to ensure they schedule when they do certain tasks and when they are going to finish it. Having a deadline means they won't over run and the product will be done on time.

Organisation: A graphic designer needs to be organised as they want their work done on time and they want to ensure they can see their plans and how it's developing through each stage. They also need to ensure they are organised as they need to make sure its done on time ready for it to be marketed.

up to date with software: A graphic designer should be up-to-date with software in order to use programmes such as photoshop and adobe programmes to design their. product. so by being up-to-date with software they can make their product the best it can be through updated software.

(M2 U24) Explain how personal behaviours and attributes affect career development opportunities within the media industry

Graphic designer

The skills requires to be a graphic designer for both jobs is that you must be highly skilled in presenting. This is because they need to show off their work and sell it to the rest of the company so by being highly skilled in powerpoint and press it ensures they have good Visual aids to make the pitch more interesting.

They must also have a clear understanding of photoshop and how to use it as they would be making majority of their products on photoshop so by having a clear understanding of how to use the programme they will ensure their work is up to a professional standard and making it eye-catching for the audience as well as selling it to the marketing team.

Both of these graphic designer jobs require good attention to detail and by having this skill you will be able to have your work up to a high enough standard as you are ensuring that every little detail in your product is perfect and no mistakes are made. This is so it looks aesthetically pleasing to the audience and therefore they would buy the products. Some differences however include that one job wants you to be qualified and have some experience where as the other doesn't say anything about it so you could be completely new to graphic designing and start at that company.

Other skills cited in the ads include the ability to interpret client briefs, so being able to determine the exact requirements of the brief will include good language skills, and being able to 'read between the lines' - they will need to ensure that the content they deliver is in line with the brief.

Being able to work within the remit of regulatory bodies and corporate requirements is another requirement. They should therefore have an excellent working knowledge of the media industry, and the various laws that exist within in.

The salary fir the first Jon is £25-30k, which is not a huge salary, especially for a job based in London. The second is only £13k, although it is only part-time. This suggests that there is a broad range of skills within graphic design, with the potential to move up through the hierarchy. Therefore, you might be expected to develop a thick skin, and be prepared to work your way up, working long hours in order to succeed.

(D2 U24) Explain the importance of etiquette when working in media production
Etiquette

When working in media production it is important to have the correct ettiequte in the work place. This is to show you colleagues that you have respect for them and to show managers that you appreciate where you work and are motivated at your job and therefore will work hard.

It is  important to respect to those higher than you and lower than you on the higher-achy. The reason you should respect those below you is because you never know when they could be above you and by being rude towards them they could potentially put your job at risk. This means you must respect their ideas and not push them aside or feel they are unimportant as they are not as high up as you. It also shows that if you were in their position you were in their position you would want to be treated with respect. By respecting people higher up in the higherachy it shows you are willing and they can see how respectful you are and could potentially give you a promotion.

Also when you work in media you must be humble as you never know when your work might backfire. For example if you have written a script and it you begin to show off to fellow colleagues and boast to them it may end up falling through and the people may not want to help you get back on your feet and may blacklist you from the media industry and therefore you are out of job and won't be able to get back into the media industry. But by being humble about your work if all goes wrong they should help you get back on your feet and treat you with respect as they know you are a humble person.

As a graphic designer they are going to be in the middle of the hierarchy as they will have people such as marketing managers above them who are running this project and they will also have people bellow them such as runners and interns.

Getting into the media industry is hard work and usually people work themselves up in order to gain status so it can mean starting out as a runner and learning skills while they are doing jobs for the people higher than them. As the graphic designer is the middle of the hierarchy they need to ensure they don't take advantage of the runners as they may have been there at some stage too and they have a way to go to be at the top of the hierarchy and maybe the runner could beat them to it so by showing them respect they will feel as if they belong and through mallows hierarchy of needs love and belonging is a step to reach self actualisation so they can work to their full potential and by a graphic designer showing them respect they will work hard in order to be given a promotion.

A graphic designer must also show respect to people such as a marketing managers as they are the leader of the project and will be setting you tasks so by respecting them and getting your tasks done on time they will see that you are working hard and therefore will praise you with a promotion and it could lead to you becoming the marketing manager and you could be delegating tasks so by showing respect to the people above they will use your work as they can see you are working hard and have respect for the company.
